On 18 December 2025, the Sarajevo Economic Region Development Agency (SERDA) organized the workshop “Participatory Planning of Functional Urban Regions” in Sarajevo, within the framework of the FUNDA Danube – Functional Danube Areas project.
The workshop brought together representatives of public authorities, urban planning experts, and development practitioners to exchange knowledge and discuss the importance of Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) and participatory approaches to integrated urban and regional planning in the Danube region.
Participants were introduced to the FUNDA project objectives and the FUA-HUB cooperation model, which promotes coordinated governance and stakeholder involvement across functional urban regions.
The workshop benefited greatly from the contribution of the the Institute for Development Planning of Canton Sarajevo, who presented spatial and green transformation planning in Sarajevo Canton and contributions from the City of Sarajevo, Department Sustainable Sarajevo, highlighting local experiences and policy perspectives.
An interactive group work session enabled participants to identify key challenges and opportunities in green infrastructure planning. The discussions resulted in practical recommendations aimed at strengthening cooperation, improving planning processes, and supporting sustainable urban development.
The workshop contributed to the overall goal of the FUNDA Danube project by fostering cross-sectoral dialogue, enhancing stakeholder engagement, and supporting the development of more resilient and functional urban regions.
