The Sarajevo Economic Region Development Agency – SERDA organised the third workshop within the FUNDA – Functional Danube Areas project on 10 September 2026, focusing on the validation and refinement of proposals and scenarios for the development of green infrastructure in the Sarajevo Functional Urban Area (FUA Sarajevo). The workshop brought together representatives of local self-government units, relevant institutions, experts and other key stakeholders involved in the planning and development of FUA Sarajevo.

Final stage of the participatory process

The third workshop marked the final stage of the participatory process initiated through the previous two workshops. During the work carried out so far, key challenges, needs and potential in the field of green infrastructure were identified, and proposals for interventions and scenarios for its future development were developed. During the third workshop, participants jointly reviewed and validated the proposed solutions, with particular focus on their relevance, feasibility and implementation potential.

Particular attention was devoted to identifying priority locations and interventions, opportunities for strengthening inter-municipal cooperation, potential financing and implementation models, as well as defining the roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders.

Green infrastructure as a shared development potential

In the context of FUA Sarajevo, green infrastructure is viewed as an interconnected network of natural and urban green spaces, including parks, forests, tree-lined avenues, green corridors, recreational areas and other vegetated areas. Participants highlighted the importance of connecting these elements beyond the administrative boundaries of individual municipalities, thereby creating opportunities for the development of continuous green corridors, the protection of natural resources, improvements in quality of life, and joint responses to challenges related to climate change.

From proposals to concrete solutions

Through discussion and joint work, the proposals and scenarios for green infrastructure development were further refined, while also considering their integration into future planning and strategic documents for FUA Sarajevo. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that the proposed interventions are realistically implementable, financially sustainable and based on cooperation between different institutions and levels of government.

The results of the third workshop represent an important step towards defining shared priorities and concrete recommendations for the development of green and blue infrastructure in FUA Sarajevo and will serve as a basis for the next activities within the FUNDA project pilot process.

The FUNDA – Functional Danube Areas project is aimed at strengthening institutional capacities for the management of Functional Urban Areas in the Danube Region by improving integrated and participatory planning, inter-institutional cooperation and joint approaches to territorial development.

As a project partner, SERDA contributes through its pilot activity in FUA Sarajevo to the development of a participatory planning model that can support the long-term, sustainable and climate-resilient management of the urban area.
