On 26th March 2026, the Sarajevo Economic Region Development Agency (SERDA) hosted a dynamic and collaborative workshop titled “Participatory Planning of Green Infrastructure in the Functional Urban Region Sarajevo.” The event brought together stakeholders, experts, and local actors to explore sustainable solutions for urban development within the Sarajevo Functional Urban Area (FUA).

The workshop was organized within the Interreg Danube project FUNDA – Functional Danube Areas, an initiative focused on enhancing institutional capacities and improving governance models for functional urban areas across the Danube region. As urban regions increasingly play a central role in European Union regional development, projects like FUNDA aim to address gaps in integrated planning, coordination, and cooperation.

The primary goal of the workshop was to actively involve participants in shaping greener, more resilient urban spaces. The workshop showcased the power of participatory planning, bringing together diverse voices to shape Sarajevo’s urban future. By blending local insights with strategic planning frameworks, participants worked toward practical and inclusive green infrastructure solutions. Through two dynamic group sessions, attendees mapped priority areas, pinpointed spatial hotspots, assessed environmental and climate risks, and co-created innovative green infrastructure interventions that could transform the city’s landscape.

The insights and proposals generated during the workshop will feed into ongoing efforts within the FUNDA project, supporting the development of more cohesive and sustainable management models for functional urban areas. As Sarajevo continues to grow, initiatives like this highlight the critical role of collaboration, innovation, and environmental awareness in building resilient and livable cities.
